THE ROUTE OF THE ANCIENT ROAD AND THE TERRITORY

The Via delle Genti, in the past the only link between the villages of Upper Verbano and Switzerland, is now an itinerary of great environmental and cultural value, running halfway along the heights of Verbano, providing enchanting panoramic views of Lake Maggiore.
The trail leads past small and quaint stone villages, such as Oggebbio, the Sacro Monte di Ghiffa Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the better-known lakeside villages of Cannero and Cannobio, until it reaches the higher elevations of Trarego Viggiona.
The Via delle Genti starts from the UNESCO World Heritage area of Sacro Monte di Ghiffa and passes through the small towns of Deccio, Novaglio and Camogno before reaching Oggebbio. From here, the route resumes halfway up the coast, passing Barbè and Cassino until it reaches Cannero Riviera, a town famous for its citrus fruits, cultivated with ease thanks to an exceptional microclimate that makes Cannero so "close" to a coastal resort. Leaving the built-up area, it takes the ancient road that winds through woods and meadow areas that are now wild, and reaches Carmine Superiore: from this small, perched village you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Castles of Cannero.
Before continuing along the ancient route, a detour is necessary to reach Trarego Viggiona: it will thus be possible to discover the tracks of the trenches of the Cadorna Line and - for lovers of breathtaking views - enjoy the splendid view offered by Mount Carza, on whose summit Big Bench number #138 is positioned.
Taking the historic Via delle Genti again, from Cannero it reaches Molineggi and descends to Cannobio, passing through Solivo. Crossing the Cannobino River, it continues to Marchile and Formine: from here, there is a small detour in a northerly direction, through a beautiful path lined with chestnut groves, leading to the Church of San Bartolomeo in Montibus.
